There is nothing I love more than a guitar player that can adeptly use a slide. I can't explain it, but it makes me giddy.

Today has been a rather uneventful day. Although I was busy putzing around the house, I don't feel like I got a damn thing done.
I made a full meal today (salad, BBQ spare ribs (beef), Rice-A-Roni & Cornbread) & cleaned up the kitchen. I dug out all the Christmas projects I bought last year. Maybe, if I'm lucky, I'll get one done in time to send out.
Eventually, I'd like to start making some quilts. But I think that will be a little ways down the road. For all my weirdness, I do like old fashioned type things. I sew & do embroidery. I'd also like to learn to knit. That may be a bad thing for me since knitting needles are pointy & I am prone to stab people in the eye with them.
I think a lot of this is an art that is lost on most of the younger generation. For that, I am sad. Some of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in my entire life were made completely by hand. Yes, it takes a lot longer, but the quality is far superior to anything ever spit out by a machine. That's why there are still things from the 1800's that people use today, but something similar from the 1960's fell apart long ago. Everyone wants things fast. Fast is not always better.
So with this in mind, I plan on learning things that ceased to be practiced by society on a regular basis. I can already sew. Might as well learn to do some other things with it. Maybe making dolls & all the things that go with them. I can bake & cook like there's no tomorrow, might as well start doing that more. I can change a pane in a wood frame window. Unfortunately, you don't find those much anymore. In case I happen to have windows like that at anytime, I can fix them myself.
One thing I'd like to do is restore furniture. I remember when I was little, my mom's mother reapholstered her couch. I thought that was the coolest thing I had ever seen. There's a lot that can be done to old furniture. Most of it needs to be returned to its original state. All except for that avacaso green monster of a dresser that's at my mom's. I repainted that saftey orange & its going to stay that way.
I like doing things with my hands. It makes me feel like I've actually accomplished something. There is no shame in getting your hands dirty. It washes off. Maybe that's part of the problem with people today. No one wants to do anything for themselves. They are willing to pay someone to do it for them or simply live without. If there was suddenly a mass power outage, the world would freak. People wouldn't know what to do with themselves.
That's why there are no good stories from our day. We don't have to sit around & talk with each other. No reason to tell stories. Unless its gossip of course. But then I guess all stories are gossip. They were just told better way back when. The same goes for television. When you can't tell a decent story, you have to rely on special effects to get your point across. Its sad really. But, I guess you can't stop progress.
So although computers are great & all that (when they care to cooperate), if you are looking for a hobby or something to pass the time, try looking to the past. Find grammy's old cookbook & learn to bake something. Go to the library & check out a book on knitting or sewing. Do something productive.

I fixed a leak under the bathroom sink today. Yes, not only am I stunningly beautiful *cough*, but I can do my own plumbing work. Screw you Mr. Union Plumber!
After that minor triumph this morning, I went & did a little grocery shopping. Walked out having spent $49.12, bought 45 items & no, there was no ramen in there anywhere. I only buy ramen at the international market. Its better from there. Besides, I get the imported ramen & canned coffee combo. Yes, it a combo I made up all on my own.
After lugging my newly purchased bounty up the stairs (it took me three trips), it was time to put everything away. I love buying the crap, just hate putting it away. This time I had bought enough stuff that I was forced to clean out my refrigerator. That's a scary, scary job. I swear something in the back moved & something else talked to me. But then again, I may have just been dizzy from all the shopping & bag carrying.
Now I have groceries for the next couple of weeks. Yes Mom, I did buy vegetables. Hell, I even bought salad fixins. Of course, that box of brownie mix wasn't absolutely necessary, but they look really yummy on the box. I only bought a few TV dinners too, for emergencies (otherwise known as "for when I'm entirely too lazy to actually cook"). I did, however, forget to buy tea. I need tea. All good Southern girls drink tea.
So there you have an exciting day in the life of a Las Vegan. Makes you want to move right out here doesn't it?

I would just like you to know that I'm a tad bit pissy. Last week, my sister did a makeover thing for a TV station in Dallas. It was sponsored by Neiman Marcus & televised on the morning show. She walked out with over $1400 worth of designer crap (she paid a grand total of ZERO dollars for this honor & then bitched about what they did to her hair). I could really care less. That was until she told me she got these shoes.....

For those of you that don't know much about shoes, one of my specialties, she received a pair of $198 Stuart Weitzman slingbacks. I was enraged. Do you realize what the fate of those shoes is? They will be worn by small children in an effort to piss someone off. They will be thrown at people, again by the wee ones. They will most likely be worn to a job interview by someone with the grace of Godzilla & then left in the back of the van to rot when they make her feet hurt. I feel so sorry for those shoes.

I've noticed the rising popularity of poker. Now with that TV show World Poker Tour, its bringing those ugly mugs & nasty attitudes into the average American's home. I never really noticed the impact of the show until a friend of mine in Kentucky, who has never even seen a poker table, started questioning me on the game & the people she was seeing on TV. I know a little about the poker world from being in it to some extent.
Well, that use to be the entire case. Not so much anymore. With the popularity surge, there are a lot of hobby/internet players in the mix now. In fact, last year's World Series Of Poker world champion had NEVER played a live tournament or a live game before he entered the world series. He won his seat playing on the internet. I'm sure you've heard the story a million times already so I won't bother to rehash.
These internet players throw the professional players for a loop. Now there are a few professionals that play on the internet & even have sponsors in the online poker rooms. However, that number to date is still quite small. And let me tell you, playing on the internet & playing live are two entirely different beasts. They play differently. Of course, tournament play & live play are also different. There are tournament players who never play live & live players who never play tournaments.
It absolutely kills a professional player (live or tournament) when they are beaten by a) someone they've never heard of or played against & 2) an internet player. When they are pissed, they are foul mouthed & take it out on the first person they can find. Usually, that's the dealer. You couldn't pay me enough money to be a dealer. Now granted, for every one bastard there are 10 decent ones, but trust me when I say that the one bastard more than makes up for the kindness of ten. These are the things you don't see on television.
I'm not saying all poker players are that way. That's an unfair generalization. Its my experience that at some point, most will make asses of themselves. That is, they will make asses of themselves in a general public kind of way. Its not being an ass in the poker world. And yes, its is an entirely different world. One that's not for the faint of heart. What really cracks me up is that you'll get people wandering into a poker room now looking for the people they see on television. Its like they are movie stars or important athletes now. It cracks me up. Poker players don't generally want to talk to anyone & they sure as hell don't want to talk to someone that's going to ask them what they perceive to be uneducated questions. Players always wanted the game to get "the respect it deserves," but want to do nothing to actually gain that respect. It kills me.
So remember when you are watching a show like that, you dont' see everything that goes on. When they show the championship event for the world series that's exactly what you are seeing, one event. That tournament lasts for over a month with a different event everyday. You are seeing about four 12 - 14 hour days in several 30 minute segments. You see what they want you to see. What makes "good" television if you will. You don't see players cussing dealers, throwing cards or playing rock, paper, scissors for $500 a shot. You see the "exciting" things that can be shown on television.
Word of the Day
poker - p k r - noun
any of several card games in which a player bets that the value of his or her hand is greater than that of the hands held by others, in which each subsequent player must either equal or raise the bet or drop out, and in which the player holding the highest hand at the end of the betting wins the pot

Man oh man. I went to bed yesterday evening & just got up. See, I'm sleeping too much. But in my defense, I had been up for over 24 hours by the time I went to bed. My head is all stuffed up & I'm coughing. It sounds like a sick seal. Stupid weather. As soon as I actually wake up, I'll put something normal in here. Hell, I'll even include a Word of the Day.

Look at all the new crap! I made a new header, because I was bored. I changed the Rufus picture a little, because I was bored. I cleaned up some things. That's right, because I was bored. I also made a new COTW banner. I think its spiffy. I tried to organize some of the crap in the side bar, but I don't know how well that went. Last but certainly not least, I wiped off the tag board. There was some spittle and that's just..... EWWWWW. Oh wait. One more thing. I made some craptastic buttons that you can use to link to me if you want to. Just please, save them on your computer. Direct link to ANYTHING on this blog & I will hurt you. You have been warned.

Lately, I've become amazingly homesick. I get this way every once in a while, but this time its been really bad. I want to move back to Texas in the worst of ways. Sure, Vegas is fine for a vacation or even if you are a snowbird, but living here...... it sucks festering monkey ass.
The food here, sucks. Museums & zoos, they don't exist. OK, so there is a zoo, but its really more like a prison. I think my parent's house is bigger than the zoo here. We have exhibits, at major casinos. So they dicate what's there & then I have to pay $20 for a very small exhibit with a crappy audio tour. Live music? Sure, if you count lounge acts. The only one I really care to see is Richard Cheese & Lounge Against the Machine. They are a riot.
Here is a list of places I miss.
¤Ft. Worth Museum of Science & History - I've been known to spend countless hours in here even though most of the displays have been there since I was a kid.
¤Fort Worth Zoo - I love this place. Best zoo in Texas I'd say.
¤Dallas Zoo - I like this one too, but prefer Ft. Worth.
¤State Fair of Texas - If you are ever in Texas during the fair, you HAVE to go. The last time I went, it was raining & I still walked all over the place.
¤Czech Stop - The kolaches are amazing. Its in the middle of nowhere really, but on the highway between Dallas & Austin. The bathrooms are super clean so its A+++ in my book.
¤Salt Lick - The best BBQ. This is a wonderful place. Make sure you know how to read directions because you are going to need that valuable skill to get to this joint. And don't expect a cozy table for two in the corner. You are going to sit at a picnic table with people you don't know & like it dammit!
¤El Fenix - Wednesday night is cheese enchilada night. Its some ridiculously cheap price. I can't remember exactly.
¤Kerbey Lane - A healthy type joint in Austin. The omelettes are the best! I'm particularly fond of the spinach, mushroom & artichoke one (with mozzarella cheese & green chili sour cream sauce, of course).
¤Trudy's - I went there again when I was back in Texas a few years ago. The food is decent (it use to be great), but still worth going if you ask me. Make sure you go to the one on 30th Street.
¤Amy's Ice Cream - Quite possibly the best ice cream in existance. No really. It is. My favorite was white russian, but apparently they don't have that one anymore. I also like Mexican vanilla. My favorite location? The one on Lamar.
¤Ruta Maya - The coffee is good. They have outside seating. There is also a gay club across the street, Oil Can Harry's. Being that Ruta Maya is open after the bars close, we use to sit on the patio & try to guess who was gay & who wasn't (there are MANY bars in this area). Its not a malicious game, but fun none the less. You'd think two straight women would be masters of this, but we weren't.
¤Flipnotics - Like I said before, sit on the patio, shut your trap, drink your coffee & watch the world go by. You'll thank yourself later.
¤County Line Barbecue - Go to the one out on Bee Caves Road. Sit on the patio. Its on the top of a hill & the view is beautiful (well, it use to be anyway).
And of course I miss my family (save for the human formerly known as my father) terribly. Hopefully I can get back to where I belong before too long. Kids, you think you want to move away from home, but once your gone, it sucks. Well, for me anyway. So make sure you think that decision through completely before you make that leap.
